What is Doctor Who?

Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called “the Doctor”, an extraterrestrial being, to all appearances human, from the planet Gallifrey. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. Accompanied by a number of companions, the Doctor combats a variety of foes, while working to save civilisations and help people in need.

The Doctor

The Doctor is the main character in the long-running British television series Doctor Who. The Doctor is a Time Lord, a race of beings that can travel through time and space. The Doctor has been played by many different actors over the years, but the current actor is Peter Capaldi.

The TARDIS

The TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space) is a time machine and spacecraft that appears in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who and its various spin-offs. A TARDIS is operated by a Time Lord or their companions, who use it for travelling to different times and places. The exterior of a TARDIS resembles a police box (a free-standing telephone kiosk), which was common in Britain when the first Doctor Who series was produced in 1963. In the show, the Doctor pilots his TARDIS by using a dematerialisation lever (the central round dial on the “long side” of the console) to transpose it from its current location in space to somewhere else. The interior of the TARDIS, however, is much larger than its exterior—it is dimensionally transcendental, meaning it exists outside conventional space-time. The Doctor describes it as “wibbly wobbly timey wimey”, often shortened to “timey wimey”.
